This is a great set! I love Tomine's work because it's not always so aparantly autobiographical as with a lot of other GN's and alternative comics. Segments in 32 stories are short and sweet and at times hilarious. You can see the progression in his work from the first mini comic to the last (quality change of paper, color change, length of work and quality of images) It's interesting to see the development. Im just sad that I had to catch these extremely late, rather than get them one mini comic, anxiously waiting for the next! If you appriciate Tomine's work, you have to have this!

Adrian Tomine is a genius. His stories and art are more realistic than life itself. It's astonishing.I believe this specific collection was made especially for fans and admirers of Tomine's work. It's a precious opportunity to verify how a brilliant career begins. It's the origin of all his work. The first little book shows a young but serious and committed art work. The shocking part comes when you realize the gigantic evolution he accomplished in the sequential little books.Maybe this review is not as accurate as it should be, because I'm a serious admirer of his drawing AND writing. Maybe that'll influence my view in a too positive way. His work is the closest to perfection I've seen in comics, and I'll buy every single book that contains his material.

Adrian Tomine's work is as good as it was when he started. Some argue his earlier work is better. I say the people that say his earlier work are better can't read. All his work is equally honest and worth checking out! ENJOY all Adrians work! Look for Optic Nerve or anything by Adrian Tomine.

Loved every story and was very impressed with the packaging.

Great overview of Tomine's earlier work.

HOLY S***. This is one of the best comics I have ever read, I'm now obsessed with this guy. I've read Raymond Carver comparisons....

perfect read, great stories

This is a box of several reprints. The art is great, the stories are cool, and you can see progress of a great comic artist unfold before your eyes. Adrian Tomine is fantastic!

Champlain's Dream, by David Hackett Fischer

Review

"Champlain's Dream is a comprehensive, exhaustively researched, yet always lively biography. Besides narrating a life it also, as its title suggests, tells the story of Champlain's vision for North America, which, Fischer maintains, was one of tolerance and humanity and remains worthy of admiration today." -- Boston Globe"To the 'father of New France' [David Hackett] Fischer applies his signature blend of social history and classic narrative." -- The Wall Street Journal"A lucid portrait of a man given too little attention in standard American textbooks. Fischer's work should make it impossible to ignore Champlain's contributions henceforth." -- Kirkus Reviews (Starred)"The definitive biography of Samuel de Champlain...Fischer once again displays a staggering and wide research...[an] epic story [and] outstanding work." -- Publishers Weekly (Starred)"Narrating Champlain's activities in North America is where Fischer excels, both in his chronicle of events and his analysis of Champlain's leadership, political and commercial backing, and diplomacy with the native peoples. Fischer's comprehensive, incisive portrayal will enthrall the Age of Discovery audience." -- Booklist (Starred)

This is one of the most revelatory biographies and histories I ever have read. This book is packed with erudite scholarship as related by an author in command of the art of storytelling. It's a huge book, which will surprise you because - your know - who's Champlain? Did he merit any more than a paragraph or two in any (U.S.) school book you read? That's probably because we descend from an English tradition. We see our history through an English lens, at least until we throw off the yoke of King George and the lobsterbacks and Hessians he used to quash our freedoms and inalienable rights (yeah, yeah). The fact so few of us know this story is reason enough for the Quebecois to desire independence. If this alone doesn't make you want to visit Montreal and Quebec, then tack the first six of Louise Penny's mystery novels onto it and you'll hardly be able to stay away.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, particularly as the importance of what Samuel Champlain accomplished became increasingly clear as the book neared its end. Champlain was a remarkable man, although the popular knowledge of him probably extends not much beyond giving his name to a large lake in a remote part of upstate New York state. Champlain, however, excelled at many things and was deficient in very few. His skill resulted in the settling of French colonies throughout the southern rim of Canada. Champlain embodied the talent of a diplomat in dealing with many fractious Indian tribes, smoothly gaining their trust and their respect. He handled innumerable difficult situations in his native France, through two regents and one extraordinarily critical minister, Cardinal Richelieu. He held his tiny colonies together through tough winters, desertion, and battles with the native Indians. Eventually, at the end of his life, in 1635, he lived to see the population of southern Canada explode and the French culture take firm root in the North American continent. This is a wonderful story, told by in my opinion a great historian. David Fischer's Washington's Crossing was perhaps a more focused book, telling a story of enormous significance to American history. However, Professor Fischer's skill at weaving a strong impression of a great multi-faceted man is demonstrated here, in his portrait of Champlain, just as vividly as it was with Washington.I would say, in fairness to the reader of this complex but stirring book, that it would be advisable to read the book with a highly detailed Atlas of Canada firmly in hand. I thought I knew something of Canadian geography but this is a graduate seminar in rivers and peninsulas and islands. It can be a bit confusing at times without a strong sense of Canadian geography. Also, be prepared for a crash course in Indian tribal history. Much of this is difficult, since it is so new to me. But it is an important part of what Champlain faced. He was forced to deal with a strange unknown land, populated with unknown people speaking languages that were totally unknown to any European, and had to sell his vision of the importance of this new land to a skeptical and largely ignorant France. He did this with incredible skill.

This book is a massive, sweeping undertaking in the best tradition of historical writing, pulling together events, personalities, the philosophical zeitgeist of the time, and the cultural impact viewed from our times. David Hackett-Fisher portrays Champlain as unique among the explorers/colonists of North America in taking an open, humanistic, cooperative and curious view of the Native American tribes he interacted with. He sought alliances for mutual benefit, not conquest. He viewed the 'Indians' as fully his equal in competence, intelligence, ability to adapt to the environment, and personal power and dignity. He kept his word, honored his agreements, and was respected in Indian oral traditions hundreds of years later.Hackett-Fisher gives a glimpse of what might have developed had Champlain explored further south, and planted a colony at NY prior to the Dutch--might this continent have developed in a very different way?In following Champlain's life, Hackett-Fisher writes an easy to read and compelling narrative. It is a pleasure to read. The book is a lavish work. There are illustrations and maps galore. The places mentioned in the text are actually present on the maps, a pet peeve of mine. There are illustrations of historical artifacts such as an Iroquois war club, and fascinating asides, such as this club was often used for a final strike to put a dying warrior out of their misery--thus the invention of the phrase coup-de-grace.This story of the founder of New France portrays a man far ahead of his times, and with attitudes towards 'the other' that we would still do well to emulate. Champlain's life and Hackett Fisher's book illustrate history as compelling moral story with lessons for our time. A teriffic book. One other less happy thought from this writer's point of view. It seems that now, when one writes a serious work of history, one writes the book, and then has to write almost an entire additional book defending why you wrote the original book the way you did. The 'historiography' section of this book is virtually 250 pages in length itself, with analysis of preceding historical viewpoints, bows to their contributions etc. For this non-professional historian reader, this was too much. Whatever happened to writing one's book, giving a note to sources, and publishing journal articles about how you arrived at your interpretations? This reader found the Appendixes, from A through N, unnecessarily detailed and tedious.

My son loves Garfield and he went from a student in "reading recovery" at school (that means below grade level) to a student who reads 2-3 grades above his grade level because of his desire to read MORE Garfield than I was willing to read to him at night. Luckily, unlike many book series, this series goes on forever! And Jim Davis, bless his heart, has made it so affordable to collect his books in these fat cat 3-packs (3 books in one cover) and Amazon has made it even MORE affordable. Unlike some books made for kids (like Cap'n Underpants, for example) there are no misspelled words as the author tries to mimic what a kid's comic would look like, there is little if any violence like in some comic books, no scantily clad comic character women, no racey themes are statements.... It's just perfect for a kid in elementary school learning to read... and now and then, I'll read a few pages... and grandma loves to steal one, too... so it's just nice for all ages. So glad we stumbled on to these! It's a long-lived interest that has helped him so much!

I thought these books were great! They were hilarious and I understood all of the jokes. I highly reccomend these books for grades 3-8. These books are really popular at my middle school. I love how they combined three of the books into one. I also love how Garfield insultes Jon’s intellect. By the way this was only thing I got from my parents for Christmas!!! I will ask my mom to buy me more for my birthday as the birthday gift. Jim Davis is my favorite author.(This is probably the only thing that I will probably get for my birthday*sigh*)

Oh My Dear Fat Sarcastic, Non-Empathic Garfield, How You do Make My Son and Me Guffaw with Laughter!I have been purchasing these wonderful FAT CAT 3-PACKS for quite some time. My son is twelve and has been reading GarfieldFat Cat since he was a Tot, and continues reading as a "Tween." For those who don't know, the book comes as one thick book, thus the "3-pack" although to be perfectly honest, that could seem to be a bit misleading. My first purchase many years ago had me thinking I was getting three books. I was very happy when I saw just how thick (a good inch or more) the big soft bound comic strip book was; so, no complaints here.He had asked for Volume 1, but I couldn't understand why it was so expensive at some places and yet hard to find at others. Well, I found GARFIELD FAT CAT 3-PACK VOL 1 here, and decided to buy it used. It arrived in about two weeks in almost perfect/new condition.

I had no idea this existed until I heard it mentioned on Family Guy fairly recently. It is a taste creative genius that I did not expect from this old family classic comic writer. I love when you find these diamonds in a sea of norms. This was an artist that wanted to try something else because he can. He earned it. Thank you, Jim and everyone else that contributed.

Ordered to replace the one the kids wore out at my parents' place-- that we had from when I was a kid!Got the package, opened it up, and I thought my five year old son was going to explode. (With joy.) Once he calmed down enough to be understandable, he was very happy that the "Great Garfield book from grandma and granpa's!" is now at our house.Down side: he is even more of a Garfield fanboy than before.

I have been buying the separate Garfield books as they are released in Kindle format on Amazon, but for some reason seven random volumes (2,3,4,19,26,37,38) are restricted to the USA only. I have tried contacting Amazon and the publishers several times but no one can provide an answer why. The complete set of separate Garfield books can currently only be bought in the USA, and I have wasted my money. If you plan to buy a collection of Garfield books, buy the more recent 'Garfield Complete Works' instead.

I bought this book as a gift for my 8-year-old grandson who adores Garfield. He loved it! I was a bit anxious at first since they are labeled "graphic," but they are completely fine. They read just like one of his cartoons. They just happen to be in a book form.

I purchased for my 11 year old son who is obsessed with Garfield. This book is filled with classic Garfield comics, just like in the "Funny" Section of the Sunday paper, only now all in one place. We own several volumes of the Garfield Fat Pack books, and he said so far this is his favorite. I love that I can find on Amazon where I cannot find in stores locally. Well priced and fast shipping was an added bonus as this mom forgot as a Christmas gift. It arrived in plenty of time.

One of the best parts about running is that it attracts people like Amby Burfoot. He's a free spirit who is best known for winning the 1968 Boston Marathon. However, his lasting contribution might be through his words, as he's been an editor for Runners' World magazine for many years and has written several interesting books."The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life" is another good one. This book was first published in hardcover in 2000. It's tough to know how much updating was done, but no matter what editing took place, it stands up pretty well on its own.Burfoot isn't afraid to think about some of the philosophical issues that often come up for runners. For example, why run? That's the first chapter. Burfoot argues that we've always run, we're indeed built to run, as it was a way of gathering food in long-past days. So it's no wonder that so many receive a basic sense of enjoyment.Burfoot likes a great deal about running. He likes the way that every race has a new starting line, a new chance to prove himself. He likes the chance to take part in traditions. He likes the chance to connect with other people. He likes the way so many show courage merely by taking that first step, let alone the last. He likes the sounds of a run, whether it has the slapping of shoes on to pavement by thousands or the complete quiet of the countryside. He likes that running only requires sneakers, and even that is optional in some cases, as opposed to the long list of equipment needed in other activities.Runners usually can be split into two categories, the competitors and the rest of us. Luckily for the rest of us, the competitors slow down and join us in the pack eventually. Burfoot realizes that, and even though he's better than most of us even now he likes to look around as he goes. There are a few quotes along the way, and some special sections on such areas as good books and inspirational figures for runners. At 150 small pages, this goes by pretty quickly. Still, it's only $9.95 new, and there is good material along the way.I once interviewed Burfoot, so let me give this a first-person testimonial -- this is a smart, interesting man. Those who need a little inspiration getting out the door in the morning ought to find "The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life" more than enough to give you that needed push.

Amby Burfoot was the winner of the 1968 Boston Marathon. He started his athletic life as a bench warmer on his school basketball team. One day the team was punished for poor play by running the cross country course. He was able to easily outrun everyone on the team. He discovered his talent and a life long love of running.Burfoot is a long time editor of Runner’s World magazine. His experience as an editor shows in a crisply written work.If you are expected Burfoot to share training secrets you’ll be disappointed. What you get is something better. You get insight into the mind of an elite runner and you are witness to his transformation into a citizen runner who runs for the pure joy and the benefits it brings to his life.If you are looking for motivational quotes you will find plenty from Burfoot and those who inspire him. He tI recognize my own experience when he talks about the transcending moments we have as runners, when everything just seems right.Burfoot views all of life’s experience through the prism of his running. My favorite quote from the book is “In the race to be your best, there is no losing”. In this pages of this book you will see how Burfoot dealt with divorce, disappointment, goal setting, winning, setting traditions, courage, children among other topics.Chris WodkeRunning for My Life-Winning for CMT

I enjoyed Amby's insights on the values of running and its impact on our lives. As a former runner and current cross country coach for a high.school team, there were many passages in his book that I shared in one form or another with my athletes. In particular I shared his thoughts on "starting lines" in life and races with an athlete who is so nervous she usually vomits before competing. In her next 5k she had such a different disposition...even doing a double arm muscle flex for me as she ran by at the mile split. This was totally uncharacteristic for her. She ended up running a PR and when I asked her about what was different she just indicated that she chose to have fun. It's a fun little book indeed and I loved that I could end each day by reading the next short passage and reflect on how I might use it with my runners the next day before drifting to sleep with dreams of my younger runner self.

I am an avid runner who travels regularly and purchased this looking for a good read on a long plane flight. What I got instead was a book written at a very low level with a large font to take up more pages. While there were parts that were enjoyable, this felt more like a book Id give to a middle school track team to read. It was not satisfying for me and I read it cover to cover in a little over an hour. I can't recommend this for the average runner.

This is a good little book that will help you understand why when God calls you to run, you just do it. There are many good things in life but nothing can replace running for the runner. Amby does a great job of sharing his running experiences with us, in which many you will relate to, based on your experience. Well worth your time and effort. Enjoy!

Good book

A wonderful collection of short essays from a perspective of a long-time runner and editor of "Runner's World" on the impact that the sport has on our lives. Amby Burfoot covers a number of topics, ranging from attempting to answer the perennial question of "Why Run?" to the subjects of winning, losing, courage, goals, children, and a variety of other topics. It is an easy and refreshing read, guaranteed to give you something to ponder the next time you lace up your shoes. Having said that, be forewarned, this is not a book about the technique, training, or nutrition, so if you are searching for one of the above then you should keep looking.

I find running to be an excellent metaphor for many parts of life, and apparently so does Amby Burfoot. This was a nice, quick read that makes me say "yeah, that's right." Nothing new and earth shattering, but well articulated philosophies.

Becoming a Just Church: Cultivating Communities of God's Shalom, by Adam L. Gustine

Review

"Adam Gustine has done the church in the United States a great service. Becoming a Just Church is one of those rare books possessing the potential to change the way we think about and do Christian ministry. . . . Becoming a Just Church provides both a theological framework as well as practical guidance on how followers of Jesus can live out the Great Commandment." (From the foreword by Dennis Edwards, senior pastor, Sanctuary Covenant Church)"Adam Gustine writes with the heart of a pastor and the imagination of a prophet. Immersed in sincerity from Gustine's ministry journey, this is a lived story of repentance, a testament of how personal―even ecclesial―privilege can cede to God's transformative love. Becoming a Just Church provides a biblical approach for churches to seek shalom in their contexts, living as God's demonstration for the world to witness with wonder. Like a hearty Sunday benediction, every chapter should inspire many to live into God's dream of tomorrow for our world right now." (José Humphreys, author, Seeing Jesus in East Harlem, pastor, Metro Hope Covenant Church, New York)"There is a generation of white evangelical Christians who are discovering God's beautiful and risky call to seek justice in this world. Unfortunately, many of these younger women and men were discipled in churches where justice was viewed as being either tangential to the gospel or a threat to it. The result is that as they grow close to God's heart for justice, these young Christians often move away from church. Becoming a Just Church demonstrates how unnecessary the gap between justice and church is. Rather than being an impediment to justice, Adam contends that our congregations are meant to provide the spiritual formation that matures us into people who don't simply do justice but who are just. He has written a book that is wise and practical. If we let these pages shape our imaginations, it's possible that generations of Christians will mature within just congregations. And what a hopeful future that would be!" (David Swanson, pastor, New Community Covenant Church, Chicago)"Adam approaches the topic of biblical justice from a position of humility and with the heart of a pastor. For any church looking to embrace God's heart for justice more deeply, you will find Becoming a Just Church to be a valuable theological and practical resource." (Daniel Hill, author of White Awake, pastor of River City Community Church, Chicago)"Becoming a Just Church is not just another book about justice. It's like reading a memoir, a prophetic challenge, and a practical guide all in one. Adam Gustine writes neither from the high vantage point of the ivory tower of academia nor from a chip-on-the-shoulder condescending edge as if to display his superiority. Instead, he writes clearly with a posture of vulnerability and humble confidence rooted in praxis. Adam doesn't merely write about the importance of embodying justice within a local church; he lives it. This book will be helpful for any church or leader who isn't merely interested in doing justice because it's trendy, but instead who is committed to embodying the way of justice for the sake of God and his shalom." (J.R. Briggs, founder of Kairos Partnerships, author of Fail: Finding Hope and Grace in the Midst of Ministry Failure)"Becoming a Just Church offers us a beautiful and deeply biblical vision of the church as the primary conduit of God's shalom (justice, wholeness, and harmony) invading our broken world. As Adam Gustine humbly shares his own often-faltering journey in discovering the centrality of God's justice for the gospel, he insightfully exposes the various reasons why white American evangelicals in particular tend to overlook this biblical vision, misunderstand God's justice, and frequently end up inadvertently contributing to the very injustice we are supposed to be confronting. Becoming a Just Church is a well-written, eye-opening, paradigm-shifting, prophetic and pastoral work that has the potential to fundamentally transform the way readers―and especially white evangelical readers―think about church and engage with issues of justice. If you've ever sensed that the church should be a greater force for transforming society, read this book!" (Greg Boyd, senior pastor of Woodland Hills Church, president of ReKnew.org)"Particularly for white evangelical Christians like me, 'justice' can easily become a fad, a program, or a means to another end. But as Adam Gustine argues in Becoming a Just Church, justice is a biblical idea that God intends for the whole church to embody as a community. With careful biblical analysis, practical examples, and a healthy dose of self-awareness, Gustine provides a road map for churches wanting to live out the biblical command to do justly." (Matthew Soerens, US director of Church Mobilization, World Relief, coauthor of Welcoming the Stranger)"Adam Gustine is not only a thoughtful author, pastor, friend, and die-hard Notre Dame fan, he is a man committed to leading his church, and churches like yours, into a lifestyle of justice. Drawing on a sound theology, Gustine gently guides us into principled application. For those who want to follow Jesus on the narrow and hard road of church and city―shalom, this book is for you!" (John Teter, author of The Power of the 72, senior pastor of Fountain of Life Covenant Church)"I love it when pastors write about justice. Why? Because they keep it on the ground where real people live and struggle. With a genuine pastor's heart and years of experience, Adam Gustine combines a compelling theological vision of God's shalom and a practical way forward for churches to understand and live out that vision in their neighborhoods and beyond. He pulls this off with humility, grace, and grit. That is, far from coming off like he has it all figured out, Gustine offers insights wrought not just from triumphs but also from mistakes. He knows better than most that justice work is a journey. I for one am glad that Gustine is there to walk alongside us." (Al Tizon, executive minister of Serve Globally, author of Whole and Reconciled)"Becoming a Just Church appropriately centers our call to do justice as actual congregations. With pastoral experience and care, Adam Gustine reminds us of our vocation as a prophetic and exilic people seeking shalom. This theologically astute resource is a must-read for evangelical churches, though most American congregations would do well to discuss and discern the significance of this book together." (Drew G. I. Hart, assistant professor of theology at Messiah College, author of Trouble I've Seen: Changing the Way the Church Views Racism)"Honestly, this book is now my top priority recommendation to every local church that is seeking to be faithful to God's call for justice. Clearly, we are living in a critical season, and the church needs to take action. But our paradigms for entering this work feel enshrouded in a thick fog of competing options and compartmentalized strategies. Adam Gustine is a prophetic guide for white Christians like me. He cuts to the quick and gets us focused back on first things first. This book leads straight to the root issues of justice, issues that begin with our own need to live out a communal alternative to the broken systems of the world. From this living 'demonstration plot,' we can become an authentic voice that extends God's justice out into the world in tangible ways. I hope churches, seminaries, and faith communities of every variation will buy this book in bulk, assign it for slow reflective reading, and follow it up with serious imaginative engagement." (Paul Sparks, coauthor of The New Parish, cofounding director of the Parish Collective)"Becoming a Just Church isn't about ramping up your church's outreach activities, nor is it about the problem of injustice 'out there' that needs to be solved. It is about the church becoming who she was always intended to be by God's design: a people who reflect the shalom community of a triune God. Rooted in robust biblical theology that extends into a beautiful shalom-centered ecclesiology, anchored by stories from on-the-ground ministry to fuel our imagination, Adam Gustine draws from his pastoral experience and resources us with the practical wisdom we need to explore what it means to become a just church. Pastoral and prophetic in tone, this will be a gift for both pastors and laypeople alike in a time where we must all examine the question of what it means to be the people of God today." (Juliet Liu, copastor at Life on the Vine Church, editorial director at Missio Alliance)"In Becoming a Just Church, Adam calls the church to awaken to its unique ability to be a beacon of hope. He challenges us to no longer sit on the sidelines and complain but to live out the great commandment and allow it to lead us down a path of justice that emanates from a true love for God and our neighbor." (Jonathan Brooks, pastor of Canaan Community Church, author of Church Forsaken)"At this time in human history our awareness of a fractured and broken world is unavoidable. The body of Christ was one of Jesus' gifts to our broken world yet the privileged white American church is plagued by partisan divides, a compromised public witness, and the lack of urgency needed to undo injustice's oppression. It is hard to imagine a redemptive way forward for the privileged white American church, but this book reframes the much-needed narrative, digging deep into truth. Refuting cultural lies that keep the American church lulled to sleep and out of the important justice work God is doing in the world. The message of this book is a much-needed wake-up call. The message is a benefit for all Christians but most specifically for white privileged Christians; together we can move toward the repentance, healing, and redemption needed to alleviate injustice." (Michelle Ferrigno Warren, author of The Power of Proximity)"Drawing on personal experience and writing from the heart, Adam Gustine shares how the church is called to work for change, justice, and social transformation. Becoming a Just Church provides practical steps and guidelines to guide the church toward new life. Gustine's prophetic vision instills hope to lead the next generation of faithful believers." (Grace Ji-Sun Kim, associate professor of theology at Earlham School of Religion, author of Healing Our Broken Humanity)"God's church was always intended to be a vehicle for God's shalom. And Gustine helps us dream new dreams about what a church that leans into this calling could look like. He exhorts communities to not just do justice but also to embody justice in all aspects of community life. A helpful resource for Christian communities wanting to embody God's shalom in the communities where they are placed." (Nikki Toyama-Szeto, executive director of ESA/The Sider Center)"I know many Christians that have to find organizations outside of their church to join with others in seeking social justice. What I appreciate most in Becoming a Just Church is that Adam Gustine insists that, although no efforts toward true social justice are bad, the church is God's preeminent vehicle for bringing wholeness, reconciliation, redemption, and justice to the world." (Shane Blackshear, host of Seminary Dropout)

Which is more important, evangelism or justice? For many Christians, how we answer this question informs not only our ministry priorities but also our perceived faithfulness to the gospel itself. Problems arise when we don't answer the question with the right balance, or at least the right balance as assumed by the person asking the evangelism-justice question. But what if the problem isn't with how we answer but in the question itself? As Adam writes, "Instead of compartmentalizing justice as outreach or evangelism, we need a fuller and more nuanced understanding of mission that sees God’s intent as larger (though surely not less) than the salvation of souls."This is this significant contribution of Becoming a Just Church. By framing justice as an attribute of the church, Adam invites the reader away from the either-or of justice and evangelism that has bifurcated these conversations for way too long. Because churches of all theological persuasions have accepted this bifurcation, Adam has to address the readers' assumptions about what it means to be the church. There's a lot of very good and accessible ecclesiology in these pages and the result is a vision of justice rooted in our identity as the people of God.Adam draws on an array of diverse voices along with his own experiences in ministry around the country to help us imagine this way of being the church. This book is wise and exceedingly readable. Any church or Christian community that sincerely engages this biblically grounded vision will find a hopeful and creative future opening before them.

Adam clearly articulates the purpose and practice of justice in the local church context. In this book we can see God’s plan for God’s people to bear witness to the whole gospel of Jesus Christ that moves beyond an outreach strategy. God’s plan for Shalom is a the way of life for local churches in communities and neighborhoods. As our American Church culture continues to struggle with new strategies to reach the lost in a post modern world, Adam shows us God’s original plan for God’s people that has always been at the center of God’s heart. Shalom! Abundant flourishing for all of creation together! This is good news!

Adam Gustine writes this in Becoming a Just Church: "...would someone who only lived in your sanctuary know thatthere is a real world outside of it and that that world is wracked with injustice?" In my personal experience of church for much of my life, the answer to this question would be no. And I think many people with an evangelical church background would say the same. We wonder then why people who live life in the margins feel out of place in our churches. He goes on to say "If we were to consider the normative experience in many evangelical churches, it would appear that the real world outside the walls of the church was not considered. Ignoring the world outside, particularly the moments of extreme brokenness and injustice, is a subtle way of being a high-ground church. Because high-ground society is largely insulated from the injustice of the world, there is a certain degree of freedom not to talk about issues that arise in our world. For people who experience life as vulnerable or marginalized people, walking into a gathering for corporate worship and not talking about the issues they experience day to day often seems offensive."So good. So needed. Highly reccomended!

Directed primarily at North American white evangelicals, Becoming a Just Church explores the question, What would it look like for the church to embody God’s justice in the world? For many evangelicals the topic itself will be anathema, but for a growing subset of evangelicals, God’s call to pursue justice is of paramount concern, and as Gustine insists, a central theme of Scripture. As such, he makes the case that justice cannot be confined to one program area of the church, but must become a way of life for God's people. Walking us through the biblical storyline, Gustine draws out a theology of justice rooted in the ultimate picture of God’s kingdom of Shalom. This section alone is worth the price the book. One of the other great gifts of Becoming a Just Church is the vocabulary and imagery Gustine invokes to offer readers a framework for imagining and living into God’s justice. He also does us the favor throughout of providing honest and critical reflection on his own pastoral experiences, which I suspect will resonate deeply for pastors who find themselves on a similar journey. The discussion questions after each chapter are thoughtful, provocative and useful for guiding discussion in small group settings. Our church will definitely benefit from having this as a resource and guide!

This is an excellent book! I really appreciate that this is not merely a treatise for justice in the church, or strictly theological (though there is plenty of strong theological work here), but the author begins at becoming the kind of people who embody the justice of God. He also provides several great thoughts and questions for further consideration and practical steps toward application in our own context at the end of each chapter. An incredibly helpful tool for further processing and discerning next steps, both personally and as leadership teams.Such a welcome contribution to a very pertinent issue. As Gustine writes, “Injustice is tangible evidence of the kingdom of darkness at work in the world.“ But in this book Gustine vividly paints the picture of how God works through us as the church to bear the light of his kingdom into that darkness as a parable, a demonstration of the shalom of God. As we become just as a people, the light of God breaks into the brokenness of this world, and that is when truly transformative things happen.

IT ARRIVED IN A TIMELY MANNER AND IN GOOD CONDITION. I LOVED IT. THE PUPPIES WERE CUTE, BUT I WISH THE BOOK WAS LONGER AND HAD MORE PUPPIES/BREEDS IN IT.

As some other people have said, it would be better if the touchy bits were bigger and more interesting for the baby.

Very cute book my grandson will love.

Adorable book for any child that loves dogs/puppies. My 1 year old is obsessed with dogs and loves this book.

Cute sensory book that my 1yr old who loves puppies really enjoys

I purchased a bunch of these books for my foster daughter, as she was so intrigued wth one that we got from her doctor's office. They are our go-to books for nighttime and long car rides. If there is one slight downside, she thinks that all board books are touch-feel books. She's constantly scratching and running her fingers over the illustrations of other books. It's pretty adorable. =)

Cute book for toddlers

Just OK. Some pages have fur, others are just glitter. Some of the "touch and feel" spots a few too small to even get a finger in, although the book itself is only about 5" by 5". The words are nice and big, and the pictures are cute.
