I can relate to this book in so many ways. I grew up in a Pentecostal church and have heard many of the questions about Catholicism that are addressed by Chad. I spent 22 years in the military attending many non-denominational services by many different chaplains, but now I am retired from the military and was searching for a church to attend. I went to 4 different protestant churches, they were enjoyable, but we're more "do you feel good about yourself" kind of sermons. And 2 had coffee bars just as Chad mentioned this book. Made me laugh. Then I went to a christening at a friend's church, I felt like this "Catholic" church just called to me. I attended the following Sunday's Mass and and was wanting to know more and purchased this book. I read it in 2 days. It answers so many of the questions and reservations I had about Catholicism since I was raised protestant. This book has set me on the path of becoming catholic which I am grateful for. I have since purchased the "Catechism of the Catholic Church" and "Catholicism, a journey of faith. Just a great, relatable and informative read. Highly recommend.
I grew up catholic but haven't been practicing for a while. Growing up I always had a lot of questions but like the book says a lot of Catholics just say it's "tradition". This book does an amazing job of answering a lot of my questions. This book has helped me love the church again. I am 32 years old and definitely needed this book.
This is a well-written book from the perspective of a person who joined the Catholic faith. It covers many areas and answers many questions that non- Catholics have about this beautiful faith. It's interesting and an easy read. As a life-long Catholic it gave me lots of ideas in regard to explaining various traditions of the Catholic faith.
Although I have an insatiable reading appetite, I have not often ventured into the realm of writing book reviews. When Chad R. Torgerson asked whether or not I would read and write a review of his book, Waking Up Catholic - A Guide to Catholic Beliefs for Converts, Reverts, and Anyone Becoming Catholic, I decided to say "Yes".For unknown technological reasons, I was unable able to get my "free" copy to download properly. So I just purchased the book. I am glad that I did.This book fills a real need that Catholics, former Catholics and non-Catholics share - providing basic, clear conversational explanations of some fundamental and often misunderstood Truths of the Catholic Faith.This is a need that has only increased over time. When I read the book's introduction, I immediately recalled what the late Venerable Fulton J. Sheen once observed "There are not a hundred people in America who hate the Catholic Church. There are millions of people who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church -- which is, of course, quite a different thing." I think the good Archbishop would be pleased with this author's attempt to address that issue.This is not a heavy theological tome. It is a starting point. What makes this book so useful is that it is written from the perspective of a man who disagreed with what he thought the Catholic Church taught - issues, for example, like Sacred Tradition, the Eucharist, the Blessed Mother, the communion of saints, and intercessory prayer. Now with God's grace he has come to understand and embrace those Truths, and in doing so, has been given a gift to share those Truths with others on spiritual journeys similar to the one he made. I found the details of his journey to the Catholic Church inspiring. You will too.Highly recommend this book.
I purchased this book on a whim - I was going through the motions and trying to live a good Catholic life by attending mass and saying my prayers, but this book caught my eye.Torgerson writes each of the easily-digested chapters like a blog post. They are short, but have the right amount of insights. What I like most is that he does more than give the references to the Catechism and the Scripture - he actually inserted the text so you can read it for yourself. I read the entire book the first time in about 4 hours (and I am not an exceptionally fast reader) then read it chapter by chapter in ten minute increments over a few days, and I find my faith fortified.Whether you are a new convert, a cradle, or wondering what Catholics believe, I highly recommend this book. It gives you just enough information to be dangerous without being "preachy" and gives everyone a baseline review of apologetics.
I am a 100% sola scriptura believer. I have a loved one who is taking RCIA classes. I wanted to try to understand why anyone would do this, so I found and read this book. It did help me understand a bit - the author does a good job of explaining and sharing the emotions. I feel like he is more in love with religion and his church than I would feel comfortable with. But since the purpose of the book is to explain conversion, I am glad he shared his journey. It was helpful.
Outstanding read. I am a senior lucky enough to have attended Catholic grammar school. I have been on an RCIA team for 32 years. This book explains our Catholic faith as only a convert can. I highly recommend this book to Catholics as a refresher. I think every inquirer should read it also. Thank you!
For most of my life, I have had an affinity with the Catholic faith. Being raised, and spending the majority of my adult life, in Protestant faiths, there were many questions about Catholicism, that I could not reconcile. This book has helped to explain my questions in an easy to read and understand manner. I had all of the same questions that the author had about the Catholic Church and faith. Chad Torgerson, in creating this guide, has created an evangelical witness to the Catholic Faith, that is beneficial to anyone, and everyone.
