A Bowl of Olives is a delightful book on food and cooking, and all things related. The book features mainly watercolour illustrations by Sara Midda with occasional photographs. The artworks are lovely. They can be the different leaves used in salads, picnic baskets, utensils and crockery, colour swatches created from basket of fruits, food wrappers, flowers in vases used to decorate dinner tables and more. The informative text talks about how food is prepared, different ingredients, food culture and markets in different countries, other interesting stories and personal experiences from Midda herself. It's a beautiful artist sketchbook.Unfortunately the major downside is the book is too small, about palm size only, slighly less than A5 size. That's exactly the same complaint I have with her earlier book Sara Midda's South of France: A Sketchbook. It's tiring to read because the fonts are too small, and the beautiful detailed watercolour artworks are wasted when most are also printed quite small. So overall, while the book has good art and interesting text, it is frustrating to read because everything is so small.3 out of 5 stars. 2 deducted for the small size of the book.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)
It's with a heavy heart that I give this book only 3 stars. I love Sara Midda's work and have her other books. But, since my eyesight isn't as good as it was twenty odd years ago when I first began collecting her books, the tiny print I loved so well is now too difficult for me to read. I used a magnifying glass, but it helps only a little. Most of the illustrations are also too small and I noticed that some of them are repeats from previous publications. When I saw this featured, I honestly didn't think everything would be so small.Design-wise, the layout of the pages is still strong. I also enjoy the colors. I just wish I could see everything better!
Sara Midda pulls us close with her delicate, feathery, astute drawings...and reminds us of small moments. (to me, that is why the size of this book is perfect) She documents the subtle colors of a bowl full of delicious olives, the variety of a grouping of salad greens, the often-overlooked beauty of paper packaging, the myriad shades of spices, etc. All these grace notes are recorded with a delicate-but-sure watercolor style that is allher own. Part sketchbook, part visual journal -- every page provides another glimpse into the small moments that make life enjoyable andtasty. A wonderful book to own, and to give.
It is a beautiful book but it should have been printed in a LARGER size. I cannot see the lovely pictures easily at all, and the art work is awesome. I will have to remember to note the size of books before ordering. Really, it's a great book but extremely difficult to read and view all the very detailed pictures. I am very disappointed, sad, and frustrated.
As a followup with much anticipation for the exquisite SARA MIDDA'S SOUTH OF FRANCE - A SKETCHBOOK, I'm sorry to say I was disappointed. Not in the book or the artwork but the overall book design. The text is a light grey and tiny. Are we not meant to read it? Certainly a loupe is required. Why make it so arduous? And the art work is not treated respectfully in my opinion, reduced so much. Margins are wider with very few bleed pages sadly unlike South of France. Even the colors seem faint and washed out in comparison. It would be nice if Workman came out with a full size edition for those who dearly love Midda's artwork. I would buy it in an instant.
Sara Midda's watercolors are exquisite jewels! Years ago I purchased her book In and Out of the Garden and still enjoy her illustrations in it as well.
I saw this book in a hospital gift shop and was sorry I didn't purchase it at the time but went home and ordered from Amazon.. it's lovely book. Every page is beautiful. Treat yourself to this charming read.
I purchase all little books where the art is all in watercolor. This one is especially nice. It helps me see the different ways things can be painted. I really love this one.
