I had the honor of getting to know the author, Marissa Mitchell, as the rabbi at her wedding almost two years ago. Since then I have gotten to know her mostly through her blog and I’ve become a huge fan of her amazing writing gift. She is a brilliant artist of the written word. Her first book, We Ballin’, What I Learned from Lavar Ball About Basketball, Business and Bravado, is a great demonstration of her writing gift. The book is the the unauthorized biography of Lavar Ball, a famous and controversial basketball coach and father. Marissa has known and admired Ball since he coached her in basketball since she was a young girl. She went on to become close to Ball, his wife and his three sons and felt like part of the family.In We Ballin’ Mitchell tells the story of Lavar and the Ball family and his remarkable ability to raise and train his sons to become exceptional basketball players, including the eldest, Lonzo, currently a player for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was an unrelenting visionary who believed and conveyed the belief that his sons could become among the greatest basketball players ever. This is less a basketball book than a book about family and leadership and vision and betrayal. We learn about his guiding slogan which he picked up from Mitchell herself, “It’s going to happen the way I speak it into existence.” The book provides an unstinting and clear vision of how the Ball family created an empire of athletics and business.There are shocks and surprises in the story that remind us that the human experience has infinite opportunities to amaze and disappoint us. She witnessed over the years first hand, how power and money can greatly influence a person both positively and negatively.This reader wonders if our federal labor laws wouldn’t protect the author from non-payment over the years of working for the affluent LaVar Ball even if common moral and professional ethics weren’t a consideration.With a renewed interest in the Ball family I’ll be watching the Ball brothers basketball careers in the future, with or without the overly verbose father controlling their lives.
