The Island by Elin HildenbrandTate woemn-two generations in the family beach cottage.Secrets they all hold.Birdie Cousins is helping her daughter with her wedding preparations.Chez cancels it all....Birdie calls on her sister and the other daughter for help.Summers past have their own chapters to help understand what transpired prior to this gathering. What happens to Chez next is unforeseen... The others in the house try to hold it all together.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
I loved this book, and was not disappointed. I enjoy Elin Hilderbrand's books, but some more than others ... this definitely falls into the "more" category. It was a tale of family and sisters and mothers and daughters and husbands and wives and of love and loss -- and death. I don't want to give away the story - you can get some of the storyline from other reviews, but suffice to say I enjoyed how the author wove in family past with current and hints to the future. Each of the four main characters came together to the island home of the mothers' family and each of the four were facing serious life and relationship issues, and each has some resolution by the end. I loved it ... and am hopeful more of this will come. Perhaps a sequel??
My fourth Elin Hilderbrand and my favorite to date. I decided to read only beach books this summer, starting in May. This one did not disappoint. The sample I downloaded was longer than most and have me enough to sink my teeth into, so I went for the whole download and read it over Memorial Day Weekend. Great start to the summer. Loved the setting: Tuckernuck Island, which really exists southwest of Nantucket.Characters were well-developed, the house was amply described, the plot held some interesting twists. I immediately liked the Birdie character and identified with her homemaking skills. I was pleased by the outcome, although parts of the book are sad.Definitely a beach read, but a good one.
She did it again! Mrs. Hilderbrand keeps hitting them out of the ballpark. This is my 3rd book back to back and it was better than the others which were superb. The characters and the plot never lag or become predictable and her "turn of a pharse" is pure genius. Elin Hildebrand is as gifted a storyteller as I have ever read. Thank you thank you thank you.
Good beach or summer read. Jumps from each girl’s perspective and allows you into their worlds. They each have their own challenges to worth through. Definitely enjoyed this while on my vacation. Definitely a feel good story, which we all need sometimes.
I really enjoyed reading this book. This Author writes about real life. I have now read three of her books and loved all of them. This story was about two daughters their mother and aunt on Nantucket. About loss and discovery.I plan to read more of this Author's books.
The Island is the story of four strong women who need a break from life. With each chapter, layers of the characters' personalities are revealed to the reader. Women will be able to see a piece of themselves in Birdie, India, Chess and Tate. The story of why each woman has found herself on Tuckernuck Island for a month unfolds nicely and coincides with the internal peace each of them finds as the month goes on. The island itself is a significant character throughout the novel. Tuckernuck, along with the people who live there, has a distinct personality and a dedication to simplicity that any reader would envy. Hilderbrand's descriptions of the island's environment paint beautiful, soulful images. In a sense, this book falls into the genre of regional literature and it was nice to see Hilderbrand bring us somewhere beyond Nantucket. I wasn't on a beach when I read it, but I wished I was.
I love all of Ellin Hilderbrand's books. They're all beach reads, most of them are set in Nantucket, and they are always cute stories that are easy to get into. Very likeable characters. Go for it. And when you're finished reading, buy more Ellin Hilderbrand books.
Boring book. I don't think the author knows enough about mature women to write about them. Her writing seems to be trying too hard and not very good. I couldn't finish this book, waste of time. I would like a refund.
