Alcohol and the Addictive Brain by Kenneth Blum, Ph.D is a research based work that should be read and understood by every professional working in the field. It is not enough to say and tell a client or family member that alcoholism is a disease. We should understand why and be able to explain it. This book does that in spades. As an addiction professional myself for over thirty years I knew early on that alcoholism and other addictive behavior ran in families. Until Dr. Blum's research in the early 80's I did not fully understand why. Dr.Blum's research outlined and brilliantly presented in Alcohol and the Addictive Brain gives us the answer. I first acquired this book shortly after it was published in 1991, and I have now been continuously sober for over eleven years. The hypothesis that alcoholism is an empirically identifiable neurochemical imbalance in the brain is still met with strong resistance by drunks, moralists and many therapists. Unfortunately for these sometimes vocal critics, Blum and Payne present compelling laboratory evidence that it is as much a neurological disorder as Parkinson's or epilepsy.
I feel for something involving the topic of addiction, a book needs to jump right out and offer help and very helpful information right from the beginning. I had to read in quite a bit before I felt like there is information I needed.
Very informative for professionals and non professionals alike
Way too technical for the average person to understand. Way more detail than is needed to get a point across. If you are a doctor or scientist you might find it good reading. I am a fairly intelligent person yet I only understood about 10% of what he was trying to say.
The book was in better condition than I thought it would be in. It was shipped here on time. I highly recommend doing business w/this seller!
